That was the worst advice I ever gave. So even if you do six episodes on one election, you still in the writing can forget and leave things out. Some things just don't

fit right into the telling of the story. There's one thing that I wanted to mention

didn't get a chance.

So in episode 5 of the Break Everybody's Back, the 1988 presidential election,

we were telling the story about how when the Willie Horton ads hit the Dukakis campaign.

Governor Mario Cuomo of New York gives advice to his fellow governor,

Mike, don't respond to this. You're going to bite into it, you're going to give

them more of a story. You're going to keep it going if you respond to. It was essentially Cuomo's advice. The part of the story that I didn't get to tell you is about five days

before the end of the election and Mike Dukakis is campaigning with Governor Cuomo in

New York City they're shaking hands and Dukakis is making a last-minute

attempt to get New York which you will get and so the caucus brings that state back.

Democrats had lost it in 80 and 84.

The caucus wins in an 88.

It's been Democratic presidential elections since then. So he's making that happen and they're campaigning and Mario Cuomo turns to Mike DeCaucous and says, Oh, by the way, when I gave you that advice about not responding to Willie Horton, that was the worst advice I ever gave.
