Summary

Be careful of the unintended consequences when you try to create a culture of ‘show up early’.
When we communicate correctly our set of standards that are consistent with our expectations we create opportunities for the behavior we desire.
I don’t really want you to show up early, I want you to show up prepared. The reason I tell you to show up early is because I’m tired of you not being prepared. But I don’t communicate that properly. What gets lost in translation and the behavior we begin to reward is - just show up on time and then we can all waste each other’s time by figuring out how best to get ready.

LESSONS:
Communicate what you expect
Don’t assume being prepared is ever implied unless you train to that standard
Be a professional, use your time to prepare to give your Team what they deserve: Your Best.

Hey Spartans, Brian Shontosh back with you on Spartan Stand, and today I want to talk to you about being on time and prepared.

0:07.0

We've all heard that saying that says if you're not early you're late and if you're

0:15.8

late don't even show up and I understand that the spirit of that and it's and it's

0:20.8

wonderful it guides me but what happens is it's creating a pattern that you're not even aware of that you're doing

0:28.2

with that on the top of your mind. So let's just chew on this for a minute and I want to talk about

0:32.4

formations that we used to have

0:34.8

in the Marine Corps.

0:35.6

And it was formations were a moment in the morning

0:38.7

or in the evening to pull all the men together

0:40.6

to take accountability, to pass some word word to tell them what's expected of

0:44.4

them or just even make sure that they're ready for their next task at hand.

0:48.3

And the skipper would say, hey, formation at 8 o'clock.

0:51.3

And then the first sergeant would say, hey gunny we're going to have

0:54.2

formation at 745 and then the gunny would say hey men we're going to have

0:58.4

formation at 730 and it's kind of where the whole gunny time came in and it was always about hey let's show up early

1:05.6

so that we can get prepared to do what we need to do so that when the skipper shows up

1:10.4

we're ready we're ready to receive or we're ready to take action and whatnot and and that's

1:16.4

beautiful what's missing is that prepared piece because what all the men

1:20.5

here are we got formation at 730.

1:23.5

And they're conditioned to say, well,

1:25.3

when we get there at 730, we'll have time

1:28.2

to figure out what we need to do.
