Summary

Sarah Montague speaks to former Catholic priest Oliver McTernan who has spent more than two decades working in conflict resolution in the Middle East. He is the director of the organisation Forward Thinking and was involved in negotiations that led to the release of the Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit in 2011. While he has no formal role in the current talks over the war in Gaza, he regularly speaks to senior figures in both Hamas and the Israeli government. Given the history of this protracted conflict, does he hold any hope that it will ever be resolved?

1:13.7

live with hope, but you have to tailor that to the real circumstances. And frankly, I can't

1:21.1

see a breakthrough immediately. And I fear as a consequence, as we will witness even more

deaths of children, women and elderly, sadly.

1:31.3

There is progress, though. I mean, we hear from the US State Department spokesman just this week.

He said, I will tell you what we heard directly from two senior advisers to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Israel is still committed to reaching a ceasefire.

1:45.9

Well, I don't doubt that, but at the same time, the information that I'm getting is that, in fact, there has been no progress

1:54.1

and there is currently an impasse in the sense they're waiting for Prime Minister Netanyahu's response.
