Today's poem comes from one of my favorite comedic poets, Ogden Nash,

and it's called A Word to Husbands.

I'll read it once, offer a few comments, and then read it one more time.

A word to husbands.

To keep your marriage brimming with love in the loving cup,

whenever you're wrong, admit it. Whenever you're right, shut up.

And that's it, short and sweet.

This is a word to husbands, after all.

And as a husband myself, I can testify that sometimes fewer words are better, too many,

and we start to lose our grasp on the matter at hand. I love this poem because many

poems of this sort end up being fairly cynical and or taking a rather low view of marriage. But Nash really does neither here.

We all know those people. Perhaps we all know those people. I have an older acquaintance who

is one of these types who seems to have an unlimited supply of jokes about wives.

You can sort of call them the take my wife variety of humor.

And hopefully my wife will hear this one day because I'm going on record saying that is the

worst and lowest form of comedy.

People say that puns are the lowest form of humor.

It's really jokes that make fun of marriage that are the lowest

form of humor in my opinion. But Nash, though it's witty and though it's clever and therefore

disarming, this is an earnest poem with some very sound marital advice. To keep your marriage brimming with love,
