Summary
When the battle comes to your doorstep, are you the man in the arena or just another voice from the couch?
In week three of Toy Stories, Scott Nickell sat down on Off Script to unpack what didn't make it into his sermon. From David's courage to Saul's passivity, from critics to shepherds, Scott walks through four pictures of masculinity we all live out and only one of them reflects Jesus.
This week's challenge: Ask yourself, "Who in my life is hurting because I'm not protecting them?" Then do something about it.
Hosts: Neil Gregory & Scott Nickell
What We Discuss:
- Four pictures of masculinity: the bully, the critic, the soft king, and the good shepherd
- Why Saul's passivity was more dangerous than Goliath's strength
- The overlooked influence of David's older brother
- What it means to be the "man in between" like Jesus
- Warrior-poets and the power of tenderness + toughness
- Why initiative is central to biblical manhood
- Competence vs. calling: why courage matters more than skill
- The power of stepping up, even when you've failed before
About Southland Christian Church
Southland is one church meeting in multiple locations across central Kentucky. We believe Jesus came for the lost and the broken, which means there's a place for everyone here. We want what He wants: for heaven to be really crowded. Around here, that means we worship defiantly, speak truth unashamedly, and extend grace generously.

| 0:19.0 | Thanks for being with us. Let's jump in. Well, hey there, everyone, and welcome to the cutting room floor. My name is Neil. And with us today, we have Scott Nickel, who just got off stage teaching week three. I'm sweating to death. You did this last time, too. And I had a long sleeve on, and I just couldn't do it. So I'm not, I'm not trying to just sit here wearing a white t-shirt for fun. It's just because I'm sweating to death. But you put on like a parka. You look like it's time to go out to Colorado or something. This is my, this is me like trying to welcome in fall weather. It's 80 degrees outside. I know it is. But I was also working production and you have to wear uniform for that. And I want to put on something with color. I'm trying to add color to my life. I appreciate that. Fault colors. Anyways, so we're in week three of toy stories. And today, you hit in 1st Samuel 17, David and Goliath. The story that I think probably a lot of people have heard, like you said, like flannel graphs and like veggie tails. We've been |
| 1:10.9 | told that story a ton. You did have an interesting point that I don't know if I knew that David had |
| 1:17.5 | already received the blessing. That was new to me. Yeah, some commentators go back and forth on that, |
| 1:23.5 | because especially in the Old Testament, Hebrew writers are not as interested in |
| 1:28.0 | chronology as we are. So there's some things that get, it's hard to sort out sometimes. |
| 1:32.3 | So when you read 1st Samuel 17, 18 and so on and so forth, there are some people that |
| 1:38.3 | disagree with that. But most people think he was already anointed. So we even see this in Genesis. Like we get a couple different versions of creation, you know, being told within three chapters. So I think it's similar. I think we're given like, okay, he was anointed. Now here's another famous story about David and that he had already been anointed king. But if someone doesn't believe that, that's fine. But I think he was. |
| 2:01.0 | It still adds a unique perspective, I think. |
| 2:02.3 | For sure. |
| 2:02.9 | You know, as he stepped into that when he was, and I don't want to get ahead, but, you know, with Saul. |
| 2:06.9 | Well, to your point. Most people know, to some degree, the story of David and Goliath. I think it's a cultural vernacular, David and Goliath's story, you know. |
| 2:15.0 | Sports, all the different places. |
| 2:16.3 | That's what they say. |
| 2:17.2 | That's right. |
| 2:17.8 | So today you talked, circled one thing, champion. |
| 2:23.0 | Hit that with how they labeled Goliath with a man between. |
| 2:26.4 | And then you kind of, you gave us these four, what would you call these? |
| 2:30.4 | Yeah, there's three counterfeit versions of masculinity and one one real version of masculinity in the |
