The By the 1980s the satanic horror movie that had been so prevalent through the

60s and 70s began to disappear. Instead audiences were enjoying stories that were somewhat less spiritual and more visceral.

Slashes, monster movies, and body horror had become the dominating trend of the era.

However, horror filmmaker John Carpenter had other ideas,

and despite actually pioneering the slasher sub-genre with Halloween, Carpenter then turned to older, more classic horror formats.

In 1987, he made Prince of Darkness, a film which brought the devil back to horror cinema,

but also threw in a bit of classic Nigel Neil-Ske 50s sci-fi. Then a few years later Carpenter drew on an even older tradition in

horror with his existential mind-fuck in the mouth of madness, a film clearly inspired by the works of

HP Lovecraft.

At the time, both Prince of Darkness and in the mouth of Madness were financial flops and both movies

disappointed this slasher-hungry mainstream audiences of the time.

It's only after some time has passed that both films are being reassessed as horror classics
