But there's more to this story NBC news now obtaining this new and exclusive surveillance video that actually shows the moment when an apparent hero helped disarm what is believed to be that suspected gunman and this person then speaking about it with lester holt.

0:58.0

I had to believe that I was going to die like my life was ending here at that very moment but something something amazing happened in the miracle actually he started to try to prep his weapons so he could shoot everybody but then.

1:16.0

It can dawn on me that this was the moment to disarm him I could do something here that could protect everybody and potentially save myself.

1:27.0

We begin our coverage tonight with Jim Cavanaugh the retired ATF special agent in charge in a long time law enforcement analyst for us Jim welcome as mentioned we have an eye on where we may get that update soon and we'll go to that when the officials come out.

1:42.0

This is a story with many aspects including the horror the carnage the lost lives we can talk about public safety and guns in America but we begin with you in your view of what this citizen was able to do.

1:59.0

Right are well unbelievable I mean just bravery he took on the moment he he mustered up his courage he went for the gun he's extremely lucky is extremely brave but he saved his life and not only his life uncounted number of people in this dance hall this guy could have killed with at least one thirty round magazine we can see in the gun and he might have had more his pockets so you know this guy saved a whole lot of lives it's just it's really it's really unbelievable courage.

2:27.0

Yeah we're looking at this footage nearly obtained what is the basic guidance you would give or remind people to know in these emergency situations because there are situations where law enforcement are on the scene and the best thing people can do is shelter in place or flea then there are these emergency situations what is the guidance you give again I emphasize the viewers these type of stories have different elements to them including the horrific loss of life.

2:54.0

But given this footage can you speak to that.

2:58.0

Right are exactly it look it's run hide fight you have to make the choice which one is going to keep you alive Mr. say here he made the choice that he needed to fight because he was standing there faced with the gunman he couldn't run and he couldn't hide so he had to fight the thing is not to be frozen in place so he decided to fight for his life and he won he saved his life and many others.

3:21.0

He I saw some of his interviews you know hit where he talked about the guy came in who he was looking around it didn't look like he wanted a rob someone it looked like he wanted to kill people and of course this gun he's carrying which is you know basically looks like a cobra we call an M11 used to be called an ingram act and very common gun in the street we used to get these things all the time in ATF I mean very common.

3:46.0

They're not high grade you know really expensive weapons they became more expensive after the machine gun bands but they were originally designed as sub machine guns they were converted to semi automatic to hit the civilian market he's got a barrel extended on this initially you look at that I think well maybe there's a silencer on it but witnesses have not reported silenced gunshots they've talked about hearing the gunshots so I'd say it's not a silencer that white extender on the back.

4:15.0

White extender on the barrel you can see right there if this and the shot when it stops right there that's a pistol the gun really ends way before that big white extender that's been put on there probably just did just to get a better grip on the gun so he can shoot it.

4:31.0

And of course the 30 round magazine it will shoot as fast as you can pull the trigger you could empty that magazine you know probably less than 30 seconds you could pull the trigger that fast.

4:41.0

So it could be very deadly a close range really striking well Jim just to be transparent with everyone we're keeping an eye on this presser where we want to get people the latest information so I'm asking Jim to stand by we don't have the officials out there yet although they're preparing for that so we'll come back to Mr. Cavanaugh as you can see I see some movements so if we get if we get that started we'll join in with that Jim will come back now we turn to the other big news it's also news of illegal nature.

5:10.0

Major conviction went for the DOJ today for convictions of the highest crime charge in the insurrection today.

5:17.0

Sedition you've heard about this case the right wing oath keepers now found guilty of seditious conspiracy that's a major blow to them and any other would be insurrectionists in our nation.

5:28.0

The other seditious conspiracy trial meanwhile of the proud boys has hit its seventh day we've been monitoring this for you these are as I told you the most serious cases brought against anyone connected to the insurrection prosecutors throwing the book at these groups that were first to many Americans exposed in the January 6 hearings.

5:48.0

I recall hearing the word both keeper and hearing the word proud boys closer to the planning of the January 6 rally the proud boys established a command structure and anticipation of coming back to DC on January 6.
