F.N. Israel has invaded Lebanon. This it claims is a limited and targeted operation. But it

also said that when it invaded Lebanon last time and pummeled huge

swaths of the capital Beirut into the ground, killing hundreds of

civilians and enacting the infamous military dahia doctrine of civilian punishment, whose very guiding logic is

disproportionateity.

Israel says it is principally fighting Hezbollah, a militant group that declined to disarm

after the Lebanese Civil War, with the Lebanese armed forces being confined to the sidelines, but huge numbers of the casualties so far have

been civilians.

Over a million people have been forced to flee.

So who are Hezbollah? Listen to many Western sources and you will hear the same response.

Hezbollah is a terrorist organization.

And that is, in the legal sense true.

Hezbollah is a prescribed organization, which makes offering either material or moral support to the organization a criminal offense under British law.

Hasbalar is certainly no friend of the left.

Indeed, it is increasingly a conservative and authoritarian group.

But it is not inexplicable. it is not driven by madness or primal hatred.

Even its adversaries admit that it has been for many years a canny political machine that has steadily grown into a serious

adversary for Israel. That was at least until a series of Israeli attacks on the organization,

including detonating bombs hidden in its communication equipment,

and killing its leader, Hassan Nasrallah, seemed to suddenly blunt its capabilities.
