disaster can be rivet disaster can be riveting.

Impossible to tear your eyes from. Perhaps never has this been clearer

than in the last four years of particularly intensified mass spectator catastrophe, the two years of the plague. satisfied Mass Spectator catastrophe.

The plague, the year of the war, the year of the genocide.

But at the same time, in many cases these real catastrophes have been substituted in the minds of the political right,

with a collection of other, mostly or entirely fake emergencies. Instead of face the complexities of the COVID pandemic,

many conspiracy theorists chose to imagine a fake emergency in which public health measures like lockdown were just the opening

salvo of a totalitarian plot against them.

Instead of climate change, bringing hurricanes and wildfires, they preferred to imagine a plot by Antifa, or even meteorologists.

And in the UK this August, instead of the violent tragedy of a so far unexplained triple murder,

they preferred to imagine a tide of evil Muslims taking over their country.

This replacement of one tricky disaster with another

simplified disaster, often with a concrete enemy you can blame or even attack,

is part of what Richard Seymour calls disaster nationalism.

A psychological duststorm of horrors that both threatens the far right and allows them a kind of release that ends up in a renewed attachment to the nation.
