The first thing to know about running for president in the 19th century is that you didn't

run for president.

You didn't go out in campaign. you didn't try to reach voters, you certainly

couldn't be charismatic and you didn't take the stump. For lower offices, yes, but for the

presidency of the United States was seen as demeaning.

But Stephen Douglas in 1860 had an issue.

He didn't have any money.

And he couldn't compete with his opponents, Breckenridge, Lincoln, and Bell.
