the women, but they were told casually, folded into conversation without ceremony. A sound that

couldn't be placed, a feeling that lingered too long, a moment of knowing

something before there was a reason to know it. No one made a spectacle of these things. They

were treated like quirks, passed down alongside recipes and habits. It was sometimes referred to as

a rite of passage, though no one ever explained what that meant.

At some point, a girl in the family would have her experience, and the others would nod knowingly.
