Summary

Amy & Paul tear into 1968's seminal zombie horror Night Of The Living Dead! They learn about director George Romero's history making political advertisements, praise the way Romero makes you care about the characters he's killing off, and analyze how casting a black lead actor in Duane Jones changed the tenor and meaning of the film. Plus: Weighing in on the eternal question, can zombies run? This is the third episode of our “Unghouled” horror miniseries; next week’s film is Night Of The Living Dead! The year is 1968 and the dead are rising from the grave and they're saying one thing.

0:07.2

Oh, guest! The movie The Night of the Living Dead.

0:30.0

Hello everybody and welcome to Uns Booth. I'm Amy Nicholson.

0:38.4

And I am Paul Sheer and this is the podcast where we are watching what we consider the best films of all time to put on trial in a way to make our perfect list of 100 films.

0:49.2

We've already went through the AFI list. We've kept about 40. We're looking for 60 more great films.

0:55.3

And right now we are in the middle of our horror series and we are really in the thick of it. Amy, I mean so many good films.

1:02.4

I keep on saying to you, I am so energized by this second season. Every time I hit play, I'm giddy.

1:10.5

I know. Every time I hit play, I'm like, you said guilty of being a good movie.

1:16.4

We'll talk about this more in the actual episode because we were talking about Night of the Living Dead today.

1:20.8

But I've never seen this movie. So I thought I had. I think what I realized was I saw the Tom Savini version of this, the 1990 version of it, which I of course know wasn't the George Romero version, but for whatever reason in my mind, I kind of mixed them up.

1:38.2

And I'm so excited to talk to you about it because it feels so of the now.

1:43.8

But also loving how everyone's been responding to what they want to see as the audience pick for our last one in the series.

1:53.0

The votes are coming in fast and furious. And well, some surprises in there.

1:59.1

Definitely. I would be happy to do anything that people are tweeting at us, honestly, like anything.

2:04.4

All of the movies that people are suggesting are so good.

2:08.7

So I'm just excited. I feel like we can't really lose with whatever the audience pick is on this. It's going to be great.

2:14.0

I know. And it sounds probably dumb to say this. But I will also just say that seeing all the suggestions makes me realize just how vast the world of horror is that we can talk about movies like scream.

2:28.6

The thing get out the exorcist all in the same conversation. They're very different films.

2:36.8

Yet, you know, Sean of the dead is even in this conversation. And I love that.

2:40.6

Like I think, you know, it's obviously a neglected piece of the AFI list.

2:46.2

And it's really great to just kick off our first foray into horror with this.

2:51.3

And I can't wait to revisit it as we go forward in the series.
