I'm John Batchel with my colleague, Professor Evan Ellis of the U.S. Army War College, Strategic Studies Institute.

The New World Report, Geneva, United Nations, has urged the international community to respond to what it called human rights violations by the

President of Nicaragua, Daniel Ortega, and his government, as it seeks to consolidate power.

Ortega, a former leftist rebel who initially came to power in 79, returned in 2007,

has been extending his control by allowing his presidency, quote,

to coordinate judicial and legislative duties as well as expanding state control over media.

In other words, the grip of the dictator is tighter.

Professor, Nicaragua, we've not spoken up for some time because there looks to be no

particular turn of phrase.

The Ortegas and their allies have total control of Managua.

And yet, Nicaragua can't be ignored.

You must pass through Nicaragua in order to get to the U.S.

And it permitted all these months and years of the Biden administration for that flow to continue.

So what is it that Nicaragua is done that's new to the UN or is this papering over a problem they can't resolve?

Well, John, as you've noted, North, Nicaragua has become a bit of the, so to speak,

North Korea of the Americas, the Hermit Kingdom with the Ortegas, where they've accumulated

absolute power and have done things that increasingly isolate them even from their allies on the left.

But in the most recent, what's happened sometimes, you know, OAS and in this case, the United Nations bureaucracy moves slowly, but when allowed to, they do move.

And so over the past couple months in response to the repression, especially the repression that occurred in conjunction with the Nicaraguan military and national police's repression of the protests in 2018, there was a committee of inquiry, a review of documents.

And so finally, after quite a bit of time of work,

they came out with this report. And what the report essentially found was that there was evidence
