I'm John Bachelors with my colleague Professor Evan Ellis of the U.S. Army War College,

the New World Report. Peru, rich and natural resources resources deeply damaged by the pandemic of the early part of

this decade.

Now of course having gone through several chief executives in a row, the elected chief executive remains incarcerated in Peru.

The appointed president who was Vice President, Ms. Bilarte, is now scheduled to make a trip to Beijing.

At the same time, there is a deep water port, my understanding it will be the deep water

port of the Pacific, under construction near too finished in it's called

Changqai in Peru and the Chinese chief executive, the general Secretary of the Communist Party,

Shejin Bing himself, is scheduled to arrive in Peru

later this year to inaugurate that port.

So we're looking at Peru and China moving closer together.

Professor, first of all, the Port and second of all the visit of Shee, and third of all,

Bilartis' visit. Any order you want, Evan, is any of this surprising Peru moving

toward moving west not east for support? Well, John, it's not entirely surprising, but it is, I think, very important.

And it's a reminder that when you look at the world from the perspective of the Pacific,

Peru and Chile, as well as others such as Ecuador and

Colombia and even Mexico are part of the Eastern Rim of the Pacific as

much as they are part of you know the Western Hemisphere North America and. And so Peru, as Chile, has always looked to a certain degree to the west.

Indeed, you know, a substantial part of the Peruvian population is of Japanese and also Chinese origin.

It reflected in food and elsewhere. But as China has expanded its engagement in the region,

especially given Peruse mineral wealth and in other wealth.

China has accumulated a very significant position.
