headline in The Reuters is quite challenging. Taiwan or China, Paraguay's dilemmas put

selection race in the spotlight. This was a choice that was made recently in Central

America, and I hope we can get to that before the end of this segment. When Honduras turned

from Taiwan to China, immediately the new President of Honduras, Castro was invited

Beijing, and there is intimation that there was cash involved in the switch. Paraguay

is now said to be in the same dilemma. From Paraguay and capital to Taipei and Washington,

diplomats, officials, and farmers are closely watching a tight election race that could determine

Paraguay's future ties with Taiwan. Joseph Paraguay is a story that we've come across

before because of narco terrorism, because of the tribe order region, because of trouble

throughout the region. I don't remember Taiwan being critical, is it?

It's more like a symbol, obviously a partner for many countries of Latin America, but

it's also a symbol for China's advancements in the region. Latin America was one of Taiwan's

biggest foreign policy successes at one point. I think they had nine countries in the region

that had recognized more than any other region in the world, and that's been doing

down over the years. We talked about Honduras in the previous episode, where that was the

most recent country to essentially change its allegiances and not recognize Taiwan and

turn its allegiance to China. The last two big countries, there's some other small Caribbean

countries, but the last two big countries in Central and South America through recognized
