I'm John Batsch with Professor Avon Ellis of the U.S. Army War College Strategic Studies

Institute, Brazil.

The results of the most recent election, a highly contested election, is that Lula

de Silva, once again the president of Brazil, is headed to China.

This is exciting news because it comes in the midst of the European War, frozen landscape

stalemate, blood-letting, tragedy, a drain on resources in NATO and the United States, a

complication for negotiations with China by the EU, controversy, blame shifting.

All of this, Lula de Silva hopes to speak to when he arrives in Beijing for meetings and

conversations with Xi Jinping, and he's taking a large number of Brazilian business contacts

to find business and to negotiate with China.

Why?

China needs food.

China's water and China's soil are compromised by, well, they're compromised.

And so what Brazil represents is food security for China.

At the same time, Lula de Silva says that part of his conversation is going to involve

finding peace in Ukraine, recommending to Xi Jinping that he intervened in some important

fashion or gather together world powers such as Brazil, such as India, such as China,

to negotiate an end to this dispute between NATO and Russia, a high-sounding ambition.

So professor, before we get involved in Brazil's day-to-day politics, which are complicated

enough, I do not recall reading that Lula de Silva's

self is a peacemaker at this scale.
