You will remember the Vice President Harris visited Guatemala City early in the administration

when the first flash of migration crisis at the border came across the news.

Now we have a headline in Guatemala that sounds disorienting.

With barely a month to go before Guatemala and voters go to the polls, this is Reuters reporting.

To pick a new president, a judge suspended the canister of Frontrunner Carlos Pignada

in a ruling swiftly denounced as undemocratic by the businessman outsider.

Professor, this sounds like a topsy-turvy election. What's happened?

Well, John, to put this in context, one of the criticisms or one of the concerns over the Guatemala regime.

Guatemala has long had a conservative elite which dominates politics.

And there's been some accusations by the Biden administration.

Certainly that the current regime of the president, GMAT, has been using control of the Attorney General's office at Tel Medana,

control of other entities to basically maintain that power and manipulate things.

So Guatemala is currently facing an election, very close in right now.
