I'm John Baxter. This is the New World Report with Professor Avan Ellis of the U.S. Army

War College Strategic Studies Institute. Bogota. The story here is worthy of a tell and a vella,

but now there's a death so I'll be cautious. The story, as I understand it, is the new President

of Columbia Gustavo Petro has adversaries within his own ranks. And one of those adversaries,

men may name a benedetti who's been an ambassador for Venezuela, has made remarks that were overheard

by a wiretap surveillance of the state security. The remarks aimed at President Petro,

having to do with the source of his financing in the recent presidential election,

threats were voiced by benedetti. Not meaning for this to be public, but now it is. Why is public

has to do with a bag of cash, a domestic attached to the household of a close advisor to the

President? And now the said to be suicide of a senior figure in the state security who may or

may not have been entirely responsible for the wiretap the surveillance. The man is dead. It is said

to be suicide. This is week two of this scandal. And Professor, I have very little familiarity

with how scandals work in Columbia or out throughout South America. I know the scandal,

Lula de Silva, he's not left behind about his corruption charges. Other corruption charges seem

routine throughout the continent. But to combine a bag of cash, a domestic intelligence officer

surveilling a close advisor to the President's household in some fashion, I don't know, it's very

twisted. And a close advisor to the President and accusations of corruption in the election.
