A prison ride in a Honduran women's prison has left at least 41 dead,

in what the government called a gang-led attack and retaliation to its efforts to crack down

on corruption and penal facilities. This is a puzzler for me, Professor, I wasn't prepared

for this. The newly elected president Castro was recently in Beijing, making bilateral agreements

with the People's Republic of China, having switched to Thailand to the mainland away from Taiwan.

This ride in a women's prison, is this something to do with the governance in Honduras?

This does everything to do with the situation of the gangs and control of the gangs in the prison

system and outside, not only in Honduras but elsewhere in Central America. Essentially,

starting in the mid 2000s with the expulsion of a number of Central American immigrants

from areas like the Rampart District and in Los Angeles, back to places like Tugusagalpa and San

Pedro Sula and San Salvador. That was the takeoff of two of the most brutal gangs in Central

America, which have a word for territory, Marisa Vatruccia and Barrio D.C. Ocho.

Within that context, places like Tugusagalpa have been war zones, but one of the ways those

Central American governments have responded is trying to put the gangs in prison. What has
