240 years ago, one of the most ambitious construction projects ever attempted in Ireland

got underway just nine miles from Waterford City in the southeast of Ireland.

In 1784, an entirely new city called New Geneva started to take shape.

Built to rehouse revolutionary exiles from the Swiss city of Geneva, it was hoped that this city would become a major industrial

hub in Waterford.

Today, when you visit the site, it's just fields.

You see, the plans for New Geneva didn't quite work out as hoped, although its history

would take a fascinating if dark turn when it failed because New Geneva descended into brutality

and barbarism.
