retired NYPD sergeant, Phil Cannon, a 27-year veteran of the NYPD.

Folks, as we covered this story last night, the fires have continued to spread.

Thousands and thousands of people have been evacuated.

People that have returned to certain areas have

discovered ashes where their homes used to be. This is a huge, huge human tragedy, not just a

California tragedy, but a human tragedy. The emergency management perspective in this is just beyond belief.

So many things to think of, personnel responding to the scene.

The firefighters who were just exhausted from working through the night,

nights in a row, getting new personnel in hospitals, getting emergency

personnel, moving them through these areas, getting the emergency workers to where they're

needed most, evacuating people, making sure that people don't go back into dangerous areas.

And that's a job in itself.

And then, of course, what we have in all of these events is what we don't even really want to speak about,

but is people who are opportunists, who now we have to worry about looters.

During all of these things, of course, there's a huge role of the police department

to keep these areas safe from the criminal-minded who will take advantage of anyone,

any weakness, anything occurring that they can ply their trade.

So these are some of the things.
