I'm Cody Gough.

And I'm Ashley Hamer.

0:06.8

Today you learn about a breakthrough technology that can translate thought into speech, a Navy SEALs

method for mental toughness,

0:13.8

and why airplane seat belts are the way they are.

0:16.7

Buckle up.

0:17.6

We're going to satisfy some curiosity.

0:19.4

For the first time ever, scientists

0:21.7

have taught an algorithm to translate thoughts into recognizable speech.

0:27.0

Yeah, researchers at Columbia University and Hofstra Northwell School of Medicine have made human thoughts audible.

0:34.2

And this groundbreaking research has big implications for medicine.

0:37.6

The breakthrough relies on what's called a vocoder.

0:41.0

That's the same technology that powers our robot butlers like Alexa and Siri.

0:46.0

A vocoder is just a computer algorithm that can synthesize human speech.

0:50.0

And in this case, the research team taught such an algorithm to recognize and

0:54.8

translate brainwave patterns in a person's auditory cortex into speech.

0:59.4

The auditory cortex is the part of the brain that's activated when we speak and listen and,

1:04.7

importantly, when we imagine speaking and listening.

1:08.8

In other words, when we think.
