Summary

The latest early voting numbers are in, and they reveal surprising gains for Republicans, including an unexpected lead in Nevada. Meanwhile, Democrats face an uphill battle in key battleground states like Georgia and Michigan. Ravi explains what’s driving these trends and what they suggest about the final stretch of the election. He then welcomes Paola Ramos, MSNBC contributor and author of Defectors: The Rise of the Latino Far Right and What It Means for America, for an in-depth conversation about the Latino vote. Ravi and Paola explore the evolving dynamics within the Latino community, discussing everything from demographic shifts to the complexities of identity politics. Finally, they examine the strategies the Democratic and Republican parties have used to connect with Latino voters and why this diverse electorate could ultimately determine the outcome of the election. I'm Ravi Gupta and today I talk to Paolo Ramos, who wrote a book called Defectors,

The Rise of the Latino Far Right and What It Means for America.

0:10.5

We talk all about this really important group that could decide the election, which way they're

0:15.6

leaning, what issues they care about, and whether there even is a monolithic explanation to describe what we call

0:23.8

Latino voters. It was a really fascinating conversation and you really enjoy it. But before we get

0:28.5

there, some updates on voting trends around the country. Today, in-person, early voting begins in

0:34.4

Wisconsin. And I gave a more detailed update about early voting generally yesterday, but

0:39.2

we learn new things every single day.

0:41.6

Right now, we know that so far, those voting early around the country have skewed old.

0:48.4

Nearly half of early votes so far are voters older than 65.

0:52.8

Only 5% of voters age 18 to 25 have cast a ballot so far.

0:58.2

Suffolk University USA Today national poll of a thousand likely voters found that respondents who

1:04.3

had already voted voted for 63 to 34. Now that number is basically meaningless because it's a national number. Like,

1:12.8

at this point, we don't care about national numbers at all, and that includes national polls generally.

1:18.2

Nevada, I think, has some of the most interesting 24-hour updates here. Yesterday was a really big

1:23.3

day for Republicans. They now have a statewide lead in votes cast in the state of Nevada, which is something that almost never happens. Michael Pruser, the data guru, has updated the numbers here where total turnout is Republicans 96,8,858, Democrats, 88, 98, 1983, others, 59 thousand five hundred fifteen and he pointed out that

1:45.4

Nevada is a same-day registration state and in the first four days of early voting

1:50.9

republicans have a net gain of Democrats of twelve hundred new voters who have

1:55.2

registered and voters so basically you can add to the electorate so and

1:59.5

republicans have done pretty well there compared to other places.

Tim Bonnier, another data guru, pointed out the following.
