Okay, now it's time for this and the sustained assault by the powers that be.

And I was thinking, you know know in the aftermath of the Charlie

Ebedo atrocity you are the murders in 2015 it's amazing to think it's that long

ago actually but it is. 12 people were killed and 11 others injured by two men armed with machine guns and rifles, identifying themselves as members of Al-Qaeda.

So in the aftermath of that, Osama bin Laden, the then boss of al-Qaeda, put out a video.

He was always putting out video messages.

And he put out a video claiming responsibility for the horror,

right enough.

And among other things, in that 11 minute video he said, quote, if there is no

check on the freedom of your words, then let your heart be open to the freedom of our actions." So the message couldn't have been clear it. You know, say something we don't agree with and will kill you, basically. Now there was worldwide outrage about the Charlie Hebdo killings and

also about the wider sense of a blood-soaked attempt to terrify people, all people, into silence,

to make people too frightened to express themselves freely. Within days of the killings, millions of people were on the

streets of Paris and elsewhere in France protesting the atrocity and it was horror and grief rightly in

response to mass murder but ultimately that whole Jiswie Charlie declaration was about the right to freedom of speech,

and rightly so. France had and has history in demanding and defending freedom of speech.

In the aftermath of the French Revolution in 1789 a whole slew of legislation was passed in that regard

and then again in the 1880s more more safeguards for freedom of speech.
