Last week, the NWSL announced it had introduced a roster mechanism to allow teams to pay certain players up to $1 million above the current salary cap. This new rule would be known as the High Impact Player rule.
But within hours of that announcement, the NWSLPA responded by saying it opposed the NWSL’s decision to move forward with the new rule without formally bargaining with the players' association. This new rule comes after weeks of speculation about the Trinity Rodman’s future in the NWSL with the Washington Spirit.
So, on this episode of Full Time, Tamerra Griffin digs into what all this means. What is the criteria to be a High Impact Player and who does this new rule benefit? Why isn't the NWSL raising the salary cap? How will it affect the NWSL and the global soccer transfer market? What solution is the NWSLPA putting forward and could we see a resolution?

| 0:00.0 | My concern with lists that purport to rank players based on marketability, |
| 0:12.0 | nine times out of 10, maybe even 9.5 times out of 10 when we talk about marketability, |
| 0:17.5 | we're talking about cisgender, we're talking about being white. We're talking about being |
| 0:21.8 | conventionally attractive, which really is just a proximity to European beauty standards. |
| 0:36.5 | Hello, and welcome back to full-time. I'm Tamara Griffin, and honestly, I welcome back to full time. |
| 0:39.3 | I'm Tamara Griffin, and honestly, I'm struggling to remember what day it is because we are in that extremely awkward period between Christmas and New Year's where you're just kind of viving. |
| 0:51.2 | We're going to do a little bit more than viking on the show today because we need to catch you guys up a little bit on what you may have missed if you got lost in the rapture of the holiday season, which if you did, I love for you. |
| 1:03.8 | And conveniently, we have this episode where we discuss the high impact player rule that the NWSL introduced last week that will allow |
| 1:12.8 | NWSL teams to spend up to $1 million above the current salary cap for certain players |
| 1:20.0 | that meet this high impact player criteria. We're going to get all deep into every point |
| 1:27.0 | of this criteria, what it means, what it implies about the direction that the NWSL sees the league going. |
| 1:34.4 | And also, we're going to get into the response that came within hours of the announcement of this rule from the NWSL Players Association, which if you've been following this saga, you won't be surprised to know |
| 1:46.2 | that the Players Association vehemently opposes this rule. They believe that it cannot be reached |
| 1:51.8 | a decision like this without a collective bargaining agreement and are not afraid to enter |
| 1:57.3 | arbitration over this. So we are still sort of at like the preface of this story. |
| 2:04.0 | And because it's deep and complex and layered and Warren's discussion, I think at every point of |
| 2:10.6 | this story, I can't believe I've been introduced as the King of Silpy transition. |
| 2:14.1 | As you know, Meg is blessedly on parental leave. Meg, I hope you're not listening to this. But if you are, hi, we miss you. And also enjoy the rest. But this is way too much for me to digest and process aloud on my own. So in order to do that this week, I am bringing a podcast producer king of the smooth and silky transition. |
| 2:35.8 | Theo Lloyd Hughes. |
| 2:37.0 | Theo, how's it going? |
| 2:42.4 | Yes. |
| 2:49.0 | You said such a high bar. |
