By the mid-2000s, M. Night Shyamalan could seemingly do no wrong.

He had become one of the most successful directors in Hollywood, after creating one of the

biggest grossing horror films of all time with The Sixth Sense, then achieving even more huge success with

his follow-ups, Unbreakable, Signs and The Village. By 2008, Shyamalan was in a position

to make virtually anything he wanted on a big Hollywood budget. He chose to make a movie

that paid homage to Monster Bee Movies of the 50 the 50s and natural disaster movies of the 70s,

made for $60 million the happening, whilst commercially successful, became a huge critical flop,

and is generally considered to be one of the worst movies ever made.

Cut to 13 years later, after Shyamalan's cataclysmic

fall from grace, he decided to return to similar ground and make another natural eco-horror

film, but this time on a third of the budget, taking place mainly in one location, a beach,

a beach that has strange, eerie effects on its human inhabitants.
