When Lars and a Real Girl made his premiere last fall,

it was a movie that people who quite know of their makeup

except those who saw it loved it.

There's a cult of us around, I think.

And it's Oscar-nominated screenwriter, Nancy Oliver,

sitting across from me.

Nancy, thanks for much for doing this.

I've got to ask you what the movie's about,

and let's see, You should have it work down to, like, a pitch.

Pitch me.

It's a movie about a man who's driven by emotional deprivation and loneliness to fall in love with a sex doll.

And the story is about how his individual story with Bianca, the sex doll,

and how his family and the town around him reacts to having this in their midst.

What fascinates me about Lars and the real girl, though, is the way the women, each woman sort of gets a scene and kind of an entrance, and we think we know her, and then we find out we don't at all.

And I think about Emily Mortimer's first two scenes.

I mean, the great thing she has with him, just sort of bringing him out of the garage and into the house.
