Summary

Most of today was driving, however the morning was spent in Palmyra and Fayette at the Smith farm, Sacred Grove, and Whitmer farm. The church has put out some really slick videos trying to explain the history, but somehow they still obfuscate the reality. Now on to a fun evening with friend of the show Jonathan Tindell of Secular Stories podcast!

This is the naked Mormon history travel log for April 8th, 2017.

0:08.3

Today was quite fascinating.

0:11.5

The day isn't over yet.

0:13.4

There's still more to do, but I spent the beginning of today.

0:17.8

I woke up as early as I could to get out to the Joseph Smith Home Visitor

0:23.0

Center to go through the tour there to see the missionaries, watch the videos, and do all of

0:28.9

the various tour things and see the Sacred Grove, as it is well known. And it was fascinating

0:35.3

because this is, you know, the Sacred Grove is where all of the church began.

0:40.9

All of Mormon lineage shares a common ancestry with what supposedly happened in that sacred grove and the Palmyra Joseph Smith farm that they lived on.

0:51.7

So the church owns this little property where they have the

0:55.9

Joseph Smith log cabin as well as the Joseph, or as well as the Smith frame home. The log cabin is

where, um, when the Smith's moved to New York from, I think it was from somewhere else in

1:09.8

New York and then previously they were in

1:11.6

Vermont before that. When they moved to the Palmyra, Manchester area, they purchased 60 acres

1:17.6

build their log home, the Smith log home. And the church has reconstructed the log home. And now it's,

1:29.9

you know, a hotspot tourist location for any Mormons who are seeking their Mormon mecca.

1:36.8

And this is, you know, it's right. It just butts up against the forest that enters into the sacred

1:42.0

grove, which is absolutely beautiful. So I spent

1:45.8

the morning going through the tour at the Smith family home, and I didn't go through the

1:52.3

frame home because I felt like it was going to be just like all of the other homes. And the Smiths

1:56.5

didn't actually spend any extended amount of time there. They began building it in, like, I think it was 24 or something to that effect, 1824, but it wasn't really, I don't know, I don't think they even completed it. I could be wrong, but I don't think they even completed it by the time they left New York. So they spent the majority of their time in that Smith log home. And it was, it was fascinating to say the least, to see the log home that they've
