Summary

Rob hosts this weeks My Turn, and he’s brought us the new prequel to last week’s movie: Prey. Set in the 16th century, the movie follows Comanche wannabe hunter Naru and her quest to prove her prowess to the rest of her tribe. What follows is one of the better examples of a new creator understanding not just the surface level story beats of the original material, but deeply understanding it’s themes and creating something new and exciting for a franchise that’s had many subpar sequels.

Hello and welcome to my turn, Waypoints Movie Podcast, where we

0:29.8

take turns talking about a series of related films to drop connections. Well, I guess

0:35.9

well, I guess we'll see how this part of the conceit goes. If we have time for

0:40.2

at the end of this show or maybe in what I am sure will be a reasonable and not

0:44.9

at all ugly and accusatory group DM after the show. But the intent is we take

0:51.0

related films and drop connections and interesting contracts among them.

0:55.7

Today we're watching pray, Dan Trackenberg's prequel that takes a late reveal from the end of Predator 2 and

1:03.2

absolutely runs with it with a Predator movie about a group of quansi being stalked by the alien

1:10.4

hunter in the early 1700s. It's currently a hulu as a hulu original and we are going to be talking

1:16.1

about it in some detail. So if you've not seen it and want to preserve some of the surprise,

1:20.6

you are listening to the wrong podcast at the moment. You should go watch that movie

1:25.9

and then come back and listen to it. So I guess to start us off, this is like set the stage a

1:33.5

little bit because I'm because I'm curious to hear what you all make of this. Well, the film is

1:38.4

ultimately going to be about considering and thinking about the reversals of hunter and hunted

1:44.3

predator and prey dynamics through the saga of this Predator's rampage through the Norman Plains.

1:50.6

The film opens with one of its central conflicts, which is Amber Mithunder's young

1:55.8

command, she won't in Naro trying to gain access to a right of passage as a hunter. Her brother,

2:03.6

Tabe is recognized as one of her village's best hunters, but Naro is being groomed to be a

2:09.9

physician in the footsteps of her mother. And evidently, as we see early in the film, has the

2:15.2

skills and knowledge for it. And I think what starts set up here is in some ways a really standard

2:22.2

like modern feminist setup, which is that she's a woman who seeks to enter and excel in a sphere

2:29.7

that is often regarded as the domain of men in her village. And as as a character, I think it's Tabe
