My husband and I are currently on the last day of a week-long overseas trip celebrating our 30th

anniversary. Congrats. It's a smaller version of a trip we have had to postpone twice now because

finances have been rough. We are in the new-billed-eel estate market and haven't had a sale in almost three years in our area due to the downturn in tourism and the economy. And OP says, because of this, we have had to carry the mortgages of several bills while waiting for them to sell. We have also, in that time, had to pay for two kids in college. In the course of the last three years,

we maxed out our home equity line of credit and things were getting really awful. We have kept it secret and my husband has been managing it all. I was unaware of how bad it actually got.

In the beginning of 2025, things started to turn around. We added influx of cash, which I assumed was from

a business deal. It was enough to pay off the home equity line of credit and do some much-needed

repairs on the house. We also actually recently sold our first property in 33 months and planned

to use that money to keep us afloat as long as possible while we wait for the

other properties to sell. So that's the background as I knew it to be until tonight.

My husband got a call from a family member who accused him of basically borrowing money they thought they were helping keep us afloat, but instead using it to live a luxury lifestyle and taking trips.

He was stunned and floored by the accusation because it could not be further from the truth.
