Hello from CNN. I'm Joe Beck, with the five things you need to know for Tuesday, February 25th.

Elon Musk is giving federal workers another chance to reply to an email justifying their role,

or face losing their job. On X, Musk said the opportunity will be, quote,

subject to the discretion of the president, and warned if they didn't reply

a second time, they'll be fired. I asked CNN's Elena Trine to explain.

Chair, there's been a lot of confusion about this and questions of who is in charge.

And note that originally, employees were told that they were given until midnight on Monday to

reply to this. And if they didn't,

they would be forced to resign. But then they're also hearing from some of their agency heads,

including people who were hand-selected by Trump secretaries like at the DOJ, the Pentagon, FBI,

etc., who told them not to respond. But one key thing to keep in mind as well is where Trump comes into all of this.

And he has said, even as recently as Monday, that he backs Elon Musk on this and that he believes it is an ingenious idea.

CNN has reached out to the White House and the Office of Personal Management for comments.
