Alice is the author of the recent book, The Whole Picture, which explores how colonialism has shaped museums and galleries up to the present day.

She caught up with our editor, Rob Atar, a little while back to discuss some of the themes that

emerge from her work.

Your book is called The Whole Picture.

So what parts of the picture do you think are currently missing from museums and galleries?

So the titles are reference to the fact that when we talk about objects in museum spaces,

we're often doing it in a very superficial way. There's a lot of emphasis on how these objects

are made and how they sort of stylistically work and the beauty of the object is sort of first and foremost.

The thing that I really wanted to focus on was a sort of deeper history about where these

objects are coming from and how they come to be in museums as part of that. So the parts that
