Summary
In this episode of Drop Dead Serious, Ashleigh Banfield walks through the disturbing case of Brooke Skylar Richardson, an Ohio high school senior who secretly gave birth, buried her newborn in her parents’ backyard, and later stood trial for murder.
The case quickly became a fight over what actually happened in the moments after that baby was born. Prosecutors told the jury the newborn was alive. The defense insisted she was stillborn. And in the end, jurors were left trying to decide whether Brooke Richardson killed her baby, or whether the truth was something that could never be fully proven.

| 0:28.3 | honestly, even that's rare. People move to the suburbs to get away from that kind of stuff, to get |
| 0:33.8 | away from that kind of crime. And yet, the suburbs aren't immune from crime, even |
| 0:40.2 | big city crime, even crimes that make national headlines, like the crime that came to Carlisle, |
| 0:47.7 | a small town in Ohio. This is one of those stories that stops you cold because it sounds |
| 0:54.1 | way too strange, way too dark, and way too suburban to be true. |
| 1:01.5 | A teenage cheerleader, a hidden pregnancy, and a newborn baby buried in the backyard of a tidy family home. |
| 1:16.3 | What unfolded next divided an entire town and captivated the entire country. Some saw a cold-blooded killer who wanted to protect her image. |
| 1:23.3 | Others saw a terrified teenager alone and panicked and in way over her head. |
| 1:29.3 | And when all of it finally came out in a courtroom in rural Ohio, the world could not look away. |
| 1:36.3 | This is the story of Brooke Schuyler Richardson. |
| 1:41.3 | The high school honor student who gave birth in secret, buried her baby under a patch of flowers in the backyard, and set off one of the most polarizing criminal cases in recent memory. |
| 1:56.0 | Before there were cameras in the courtroom, before the country took sides, there was just an 18-year-old girl in Carlisle, and a secret she simply could not hide any longer. |
| 2:09.6 | It all started in May of 2017. |
| 2:13.7 | Brooke Skyler Richardson was a high school senior, a cheerleader, and by all accounts, the perfect small town teenager. |
| 2:23.0 | Her parents were well known in the community. |
| 2:25.7 | Her mom was a real estate agent. |
| 2:27.1 | Her dad was a respected accountant. |
