Right now, lawmakers in Washington are grappling with two very different kinds of emergencies.

The first is the rapid fire revelations that are coming out of the January 6th committee hearings,

which have, frankly, cast a disturbing

spotlight on the unhealthy state of our politics in America. The second is the epidemic of gun

violence in this country, which has finally led to a real effort to do something meaningful

in the wake of so many tragedies just in the last few months. Together, though, they paint a stark

portrait of the current challenges facing Congress and the country at large. Today, the January 6th Committee announced that its hearings are now

going to extend into next month after saying they've received more tips and more information as the

hearings have unfolded. This time tomorrow, the committee will be in the middle of its fifth hearing.

That one is going to focus on President Trump's efforts to use the Justice Department

to potentially help him overturn the election.

But all of this comes after yesterday when state election officials testified about the sustained pressure they faced

from President Trump, his associates, and even his supporters to throw out the results of the 2020

election and simply proclaim Trump the victor.
