As much of the country is digging out from the winter storm and dealing with the travel chaos caused by the weather, there are escalating tensions of a different kind in several of the world's hotspots today, all of which will be top of the agenda for President Biden in the new year as the White House contends with the ongoing war in Ukraine and the deepening ties between Russia and China.

A spokesman for the White House National Security Council is calling out China for, quote,

provocative and destabilizing moves after China flew 71 warplanes and sent seven ships near Taiwan this weekend.

Beijing says the massive show of force was a response to the

U.S. defense spending bill that Congress passed last week, which included $10 billion over the next

five years to help modernize Taiwan's military. Meanwhile, tensions also flared on the nearby

Korean peninsula as five North Korean drones entered South Korean airspace,
