it gets complicated. There's groups of people moving all over.

Absolutely. Why does Mormon give us a flashback here?

Again, I'm quoting from Grant Hardy from a book called Understanding the Book of Mormon.

This is just one reason.

I think Brother Hardy's on is something here.

He says, Mormon knew that this settlement,

the one we're about to read about,

was the origin of both the Nephite Christian Church and the line of prophets who would

dominate the years leading up to the coming of Christ. These leaders included the two

alma's, the two Helamines, and the later two Nephites as well.

This is not a random story that Mormons trying to highlight here.

This flashback is going to help us to understand

where Alma the Elder came from and hence where

Alma the Younger came from and then Heelim in chapter 9 it starts off this was written on the

original plates the record of Zenith, an account of his people,

from the time they left the land of Zarajemla until the time that they were delivered

out of the hands of the Lamanites.

We mentioned this earlier, but this is just the story of this group of people

who left Zaryhamla to try to come back to the land of first inheritance or near there.
