0:30.6	So mortification is a harsh word.
0:32.6	It means to make dead, to kill.
0:35.6	And our Lord tells us we have to cut off our hand if it causes us a sin or tear out our

0:52.0	which are on the earth and then he lists though what those things are, fornication, anger, indignation, blasphemy.
1:01.0	So the first and essential thing that we must put to death is any tendency to sin, any desire to commit sin.
1:10.0	We all have those in us because of virginal sin,
1:13.6	personal sin.
1:15.6	So mortification is necessary for salvation,
1:18.6	in that sense that you have desires which it's painful sometimes
1:23.6	in a way or at least difficult to repress and check,
1:26.6	which would lead you into sin.
1:29.8	And those are left, though, in us, as the Council of Trent says,
