What is it with sports and crypto?

Major League Baseball, the NBA, Tom Brady, Spencer Dinwiddie, Leonel Messi. The list of

sporting institutions and athletes who've dabbled in NFTs and other crypto projects is impressive.

At CoinDesk's Consensus Conference in Austin this year, we even rented out a parking

lot to build a separate mini arena dubbed SportCort to discuss this relationship. I think the connection

stands from the fact that other than providing a system of sound money, crypto value proposition

that most resonates is that it helps create and grow a sense of community among

distinct groups of users. Crypto rewards incentivize actions that reinforce a sense of belonging.

And as the Board 8 Yacht Club's success demonstrated, digital assets such as NFTs can function

as tickets for exercising membership rights with with their value rising, the more members

engage with each other to build community. And other than religion, and perhaps the K-pop

megaband BTS, there are no communities to which people feel a greater sense of impassioned
