The Core 4, the four headlines you need to know. Should big oil companies pay for the damage they cause to the environment?

The state of Vermont says yes. On Thursday, Vermont became the first state to make fossil fuel

companies pay for climate damage. The law passed in Vermont is really similar to a program that

the EPA set, where oil companies need to either directly clean up or pay for damages caused by

extreme weather caused by climate change.

Now, it is hard to figure out exactly what these oil companies are going to be charged

when a climate change enhanced weather event happens.

But the idea behind the law is that weather events are becoming more extreme due to climate

change.

In places like Vermont, you can imagine, you know, drought, wildfires, and even the

impact of worse hurricanes becoming an issue.

And the state's legislators believe that cleanup of those weather events shouldn't be

paid for by Vermont citizens, but by fossil fuel companies contributing to climate change.

The one thing I do find interesting is how they're going to charge each of these companies.

Theoretically, once the cost of a weather event is determined, the portion of that cost
