We are beginning another Monday on the Kubi, not in the United States, not in South Korea,

but in Syria, where Bashar al-Assad's regime has fallen after 50 years.

Assad and his family have reportedly fled to Moscow, where he was granted asylum,

and will reunite with his main international backer, the Kremlin.

The rebel group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, or HTS, now has control of Damascus, along with much of northwest Syria.

HTS already has a government-like structure which it has set up to run day-to-day affairs in the region,

and its leader has sought to remake the group's image as slightly less hard line

by cutting ties with al-Qaeda, if you want to get a sense of where they started.

On Saturday, the UN Special Envoy for Syria called for immediate talks in Geneva to ensure

an orderly political transition. I think we may have let that ship sail already.
