The U.S. Department of Energy is scheduled to hold a media briefing tomorrow morning, Tuesday

the 13th at 10 a.m. Eastern to report on a, quote, major scientific breakthrough. Energy Secretary

Jennifer Granholm will be joined by officials from the National Security Administration and Lawrence

Livermore National Laboratory. While officials from the lab are remaining tight-lipped,

and the Department of Energy told Reuters they have no information ahead of the briefing,

scientists have been talking amongst themselves,

and the Financial Times was able to get the scoop from a few anonymous sources.

The major scientific breakthrough is expected to be that the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory

achieved a significant milestone in nuclear fusion,

a net energy gain. More energy was produced by the reaction than it took to cause it.

A simple concept in summation, but one which physicists have been chasing since the 1950s.

Plasma physicist and author Dr. Arthur Terrell told the Financial Times,

quote,

if this is confirmed, we are witnessing a moment of history.
