Hawaii's Mauna Loa began erupting late last night for the first time in 40 years. As of recording Monday afternoon,

the Hawaii Civil Defense Agency has upgraded the volcano alert level from an advisory to a warning,

with some shelters opening in the area as a precaution, although no evacuation orders have been issued.

The U.S. Geological Survey says residents in the area should review their emergency plans and stay alert,

but at the moment the eruption is staying fairly contained.

Mount Aloa is the world's largest active volcano, standing at 13,679 feet above sea level,

and spanning more than 2,000 square miles, or just over half of the entire area of Big Island, the southernmost island of Hawaii where the volcano is located.
