Let's talk about digital minimalism which talks about how we need to be more selective about the technologies that we adopt in our personal lives.

Yeah. Okay. Two unrelated things.

Tell me about that decision to never join social media because you know I find my husband for example he's a musician and he wants to do

more deep work and he find he's constantly toying with the social media thing he

feels it's a way for me to get my music out there. It's a way for

me to promote my music and then you know there's there's a part of him that's like I just

want to be in my deep work all the time you know 24-7. So tell us about your decision to not have social media.

You know, I don't even remember the exact circumstances when I made that initial decision. I was in a university, I was a

college student when Facebook arrived and for whatever reason I have some hazy memories of

why I was like I'm not going to do this, but everyone else did. So almost immediately I had this detached anthropologist type purged to sort of look at this technology spreading. it just didn't interest me.

And then as the technologies, you know, they begin to advance,

I moved on to graduate school, and I was doing a very intense intellectual

graduate program.

So I was getting my doctorate in computer science at MIT. I was in the

computer science lab's famed theory group. This is a place where there was four

different MacArthur Genius Grant winners that were like within a hallway walk of me people would stare at white boards for

hours at a time this was not a place for social media was seen as being important
