I'm Brian Hyatt. This is Rolling Stone Music Now. Today we're going to take a journey back to 2004.

It was a really interesting moment in music and one of the things that was happening was a revival of really cool indie-leaning rock in the mainstream on major labels.

One of the biggest manifestations of that phenomenon was good news for people who love bad news.

The classic album by Modest Mouse that came out 20 years ago today.

April 6, 2004. The album of course spawned the huge single, Floton, but it's also a great album

from start to finish from one of the very best American

bands of the last 30 years or so, and they're still great.

A special expanded edition of that album with a bunch of new remixes just hit streaming, and a

vinyl reissue is coming out on May 17th.

I was really happy to have a chance to talk to that band's frontman and leader and songwriter

Isaac Brock. We talked about his band's past and a bit about the future too.

It's a really fun one. Here's that conversation.

Woke up to drop kids off at school and now I'm at the studio getting ready to

record and shit. Sweet, dare I ask what precisely are you working on?

Just new music, just a bunch of whatever comes to mind.

Would it be fair to say that it's new modest mouse music or is it?

Yeah, no.

I'm having a way of that for a in a minute. You feeling good about it? Yeah, I feel really good about some of it and things. And some of it I'm like, I feel good about this and I'm sure no one else will. Which it's fine. That must not be the first time you've had a feeling like that.

I mean I don't think one of the songs I don't think anyone in the room that we worked on it for several days.

There's a moment where they're like, oh, this is the song. I was like, yes, this is where I was going with it.
