Summary

Welcome to the Part Two of the second segment in a miniseries on the very much-maligned Queen Mary I of England. Thanks to PhD candidate Johanna Strong for orchestrating this entire series by teaming up with some of the leading researchers in the field. In this episode, our guest is PhD candidate, Peter Stiffel. Peter is researching contemporary Marian portraiture imagery at the University of Kent, and is the perfect guest for our current topic. Today, Peter and Johanna give us some brilliant insight into the image of Mary that was presented to the world.

I am your host, Johanna Strong, and I am finishing up a PhD at the University of Winchester about Mary's legacy.

For this episode, I'm joined once again by Peter Stiffel, who is a PhD student at the University

of Kent, researching contemporary Marian portraiture and imagery.

0:40.2

Peter will be familiar to Tudor's dynasty fans with his blog post, with his expert talk for

0:46.6

Patreon patrons, and of course, with our first part of our conversation about Marian portraiture

0:53.7

on the last episode.

0:56.4

So this time, we're going to continue that conversation and pick up where we left off

1:01.6

talking about Marian portraiture. So without further ado, I will pass it over to Peter,

1:08.0

who will continue talking to us about Mary the First, as she's seen in

1:12.4

portraits, on coins, and on seals. Over to you, Peter. Thank you so much. So if we skip a

1:20.2

couple of years to around, well, we're not quite sure when this next portrait is made. Some people

1:25.5

say 1555, some people will say 56, 57, you know, we're not quite sure, but next portrait is made. Some people say 1555, some people say it's 56, 57.

1:29.7

You know, we're not quite sure, but we know it's the second half of the rain, shall we say.

1:34.1

So this is by, again, Hans Eworth. And even though a lot of people say, oh, it's exactly the same

1:40.4

as his previous one, well, I don't think it is. It sends a completely different message.

1:47.0

The previous one, obviously, showed her as a queen. She's just succeeded. She's, you know,

1:52.2

she's in ecstasy of her glory. This one, if we go, if we say it's 1556, 1557, just for

2:00.3

argument's sake, if we look at the clothes that she

2:03.5

wears, they're very Spanish. She's switched. She's no longer seen as just an English queen.
