Summary

Dr. L says we are a culture obsessed with expertise. We are in a constant hustle of one-up-manship and forgetting that we can find tremendous wisdom in not being the best. Sometimes when we give ourselves permission to suck at things we actually come out on top because we learn from the experience, gain wisdom from the failures, and extrapolate a new tolerance of getting uncomfortable.

LESSONS:
Always looking to be the best and claiming your expertise can be a fool’s race.
When you do something that you know you’re not good at you creative a learning experience for yourself that is essential for growth.
Pick one thing every week to do that you know you’re not good at. Write down the ways that engaging in this experience gave you wisdom and new knowledge about yourself.

0:36.2

It's okay to say, I don't know. Great, try doing that. I guarantee that that's actually going to get you into a position where you

0:44.6

actually gain more wisdom and knowledge than if you put yourself up on this pedestal

0:48.9

without an openness to learning and to hearing from other individuals.

0:54.0

Here is how you do that.

0:56.0

Sign up for something that you know you're not going to be good at.

0:59.0

What would that be for me?

1:00.0

That would be dancing.

1:02.0

That would be me going out and joining a dancing group. Yep, just not my jam, but if I did it I would

1:08.0

totally suck. But guess what? My guess is I would have a lot of fun. I would engage in some humility, right?

1:15.0

And I would practice being uncomfortable, okay?

1:18.6

So what is that going to be for you?

1:20.1

What's one thing that you can think of, that you know you're not good at that you're going to try.

1:26.4

Okay? And do it maybe once a week. Do it enough so that you kind of get used to

1:31.8

this idea of sucking.

1:33.0

Now again, yes, we're Spartans, we want to be awesome,

1:35.9

we want to persevere, we want to gain grit and resilience.
