Summary

An interview with composer Jeffrey Goodman.Jeff Goodman has composed some wonderful pieces evoking the world of ancient Egypt. Taking inspiration from mythology, art and literature, he crafts lovely songs with a focus on authenticity in instrumentation. As part of the larger investigation of music, I invited him onto the show for a discussion about composition, ancient musicality, and how to evoke the past when we have no written notation left. This is the first time I've interviewed someone; it was an interesting experience! his approach to evoking that ancient world.

Along the way, we discuss things like the scales that the Egyptians might have used, the various instruments which

1:45.2

we have recovered, and what those indicate about their compositions.

and by looking at replicas of those instruments we can at least get a very basic understanding

2:15.8

of what the instruments were capable of and what sounds they made.

2:19.9

From this, we can do some attempts at reconstruction and Jeffrey Goodman has approached

2:25.0

this much more carefully than many others. So sit back and enjoy a short interview
