Welcome to the Phoenix Helix podcast dedicated to autoimmune resilience. Today, I have a mindset minisode for you, so let's dive right in.

0:26.1

Thank you. Hi friends.

0:31.4

So today I want to talk about embracing imperfectionism.

0:36.1

Full disclosure, I am a recovering perfectionist myself. and in spite of knowing that perfection is impossible

0:39.5

and human beings are fallible, and I am human, like all of you, I still sometimes find

0:46.2

myself unconsciously striving for perfection, especially in times of stress. So you may

0:53.0

wonder, why is this a problem? Because there's a big

0:56.5

difference between healthy striving for excellence and pursuing the impossible. And perfectionism

1:04.0

pursues the impossible. And how that often manifests in someone's life is that a fear of failure

1:10.6

can prevent us from trying new

1:12.6

things altogether. When we do have goals, we might procrastinate because we're afraid we

1:17.4

won't do them perfectly. We often have trouble accepting help because we don't trust anyone

1:22.9

else to do things right. We tend to hate mistakes, judging both ourselves and other people anytime we spot one.

1:32.1

Nothing is ever good enough to be considered complete, and we apply that standard to ourselves as well,

1:38.4

never feeling that we are good enough. Our inner critic can get louder and louder, and we become very sensitive to the

1:46.3

criticism of others. So not surprisingly, there are health consequences to this type of perfectionism.

1:53.4

Not only does it increase depression and anxiety, but across a number of health conditions,

1:59.4

including autoimmune disease, it worsens health

2:02.8

outcomes. This is important for us to know because if we apply perfectionism to our healing

2:08.5

path, which many of us do, that can backfire. So it doesn't mean we shouldn't have any goals at all,

2:16.6

no standards, not care about anything.

2:19.1

That's not what I'm trying to say.
