The It's a truth universally acknowledged that horror cinema has never been

particularly respected or celebrated by critics and awards ceremonies.

How is it then that in the 1990s,

two films managed to break this mould.

In 1995, a movie about a psychopath who force feeds one man to death and puts another woman's

severed head in a box, was showered with critical praise and was even nominated for an Academy Award.

Even more shockingly, how is it that a film made a few years earlier

about a hissing snarling cannibal and a serial killer that removes and wears

women skins became one of only three movies in cinema history to win an Oscar in every single one of the five main categories.

And the Oscar goes to the Silence of the Land.

Were Hollywood finally starting to take horror films seriously? Or was it because that these films were simply being labeled as something else, psychological thrillers?
