If you still have a job, perhaps you're sitting in the sun relaxing today. Many businesses are closed to observe the holiday. But if you're one of the nearly 40 million

unemployed Americans, you may be spending the day combing the internet for a new job. For most

people, the need is urgent. For the last few months, unemployment payments have been padded with an extra $600 a week

through the CARES Act, the federal stimulus plan. But those extra unemployment payments are scheduled

to stop at the end of July, or even sooner in many cases. Recent news reports say they could end a week

before the end of the month because of the way unemployment is administered in different states.

That's a frightening surprise to many.

The loss of that weekly $600 will shrink benefits by about 60 percent, according to CNBC.

Around the country, the average state unemployment check is only about $380 a week.
